I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”
My mom learned it because she figured she’ll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.
https://www.youtube.com/user/billvicars
and here’s the link to the website he puts in his videos:
It’s sobering to realize that I’m already hard of hearing and may eventually be functionally deaf in most situations, and even if I learn ASL if I want to communicate with the people who are currently my friends, THEY WILL HAVE TO LEARN so they can talk back.
I don’t know a whole lot of people who would do that for one friend. No matter how much they were loved.
TTRPGs are going to become a LOT less fun for me.
We should absolutely teach ASL in primary school to every child for at least a year or two. Incredibly useful.

Show some respect, people.
THANK YOU
The story of Balto is interesting. He led a team of sled dogs across the Alaskan wilderness in the dead of winter with diphtheria antitoxins to stop an outbreak in Nenana Alaska. Diphtheria is a deadly infectious disease that could wipe out a third of a town’s population. It is mostly unknown to the public today because of vaccines. Balto’s body is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
He’s a big hero of mine!
Let’s not forget Togo! Who, at 12 years old during the serum run, lead his team 200 miles through much more dangerous conditions during the first leg of the journey before Balto ran the last 55-mile stretch.

Togo and Balto didn’t bust their asses for dying children for you to turn around and not vaccinate your damn kids

If someone is wearing makeup in the pool, don’t deliberately splash them.
If someone has done their hair nicely, don’t mess it up.
If someone in a t-shirt has scars on their arms, don’t ask them about it.
If someone doesn’t want to get in the water, don’t push them.
If someone still wants to wear jeans, don’t laugh at them for it.
If someone has sweat patches, don’t point them out.
If someone’s chest is obviously prominent, don’t stare.
If you can see someone’s underwear/ binder, don’t comment on it.
If someone is blatantly covering something up, don’t try to reveal it.Not everyone can feel totally comfortable with the fact it’s Summer, don’t make them feel worse.
